It is important to know how a standing desk works. These desks are designed to make the user feel comfortable while standing up and have enough rest time while sitting down. To make the proper purchase, the user must understand how a standing desk works. Since the standing desk is used to promote an ergonomic workspace, buying one will not be as simple as buying an ordinary table.

What are the types of standing desks?

There are two main types of standing desks. These are manual and motorized. The manually adjustable desk has three categories. The most popular and the cheapest is the crank-adjustable desks. These are the desks that have knobs beneath the desk that can be adjusted to enable the desktop to be lifted or lowered. To turn the desk, the crank needs to be turned six times to make it move by an inch.

The one-time adjustable table is called manually adjustable but is really a fixed high table that is mounted on a base. The third type is the product that makes use of alternative bases such as counterbalances, spring-loaded and powered by gas.

The electric standing desk is more fashionable and popular because the use of standing desks is easier to use than manually operated desks. The height can be adjusted with a push of a button. However, the motor can make a lot of noise as the desk moves up and down. There are electric desks with a memory feature which makes adjustments quick. These desks are intended for people who change sitting and standing positions often.

Other Standing Desk Options

Users might develop a feeling of overwhelming fear or hesitation about using a standing desk but are forced to because of an existing health condition. This kind of worker can start with a desktop attachment.

These attachments can be bought or made by the user himself and can be used by people who do not have space or in a cubicle at work. These attachments are great for people who cannot stand for long periods.

However, these attachments are difficult to adjust. The desk is cheap and there is not much investment needed, especially if the user is still exploring or just testing the waters.

There is the stand-only desk that is a fixed desk that can be mounted on a wall or fastened to exposed pipes. These are desks that cannot be moved or adjusted and the height is fixed. These are low cost and can easily be constructed at home.

This is because the table remains in one height and will only fit one user’s height and body size. There will be no room to adjust or there will be no attachments for it go up and down. Another desk must be placed near the stand-only desk because the user will have to transfer from the tall desk to the shorter desk frequently.

What are Treadmill Desks?

The innovators of the standing desk took it to the extra mile by building the treadmill table. This is a product that has a fixed table on top of a treadmill. The height of the table is adjustable but the computer monitor is at the level of vision of the user.

Work can be done while the user walks at 2 MPH and can read emails and respond to them while on the treadmill. The user can potentially burn as many as 1,000 calories per day.

The downside of treadmill desks is that they are not good for writing, drafting or doing graphic design. The desk is only good for using a variety of devices but not good for tasks involving pen and paper.


The standing desk is a great way to be fit and productive. While the user is using the standing desk, the person has a bigger potential of burning toxins and excess fat by just standing up or taking frequent walks around the office.

There are products that are designed for cubicles or smaller spaces so that the user can still shift from standing to sitting positions. However, learning to use the standing table is a process and should be taken slowly.

This is contrary to the belief that use of the standing desk should be done cold turkey because such an endeavor most likely ends in failure.
